SKILLS TRAINING
We focus on enhancing current functioning by teaching positive coping skills and expanding on existing strengths using evidence based interventions whenever possible.
In Skills Training we focus on effective behaviors and techniques, rather than processing thoughts, to help achieve our goals. We offer a wide range of skill trainings such as DBT, social skills, parenting skills, ADD/HD and executive function coaching, and PCIT.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) focuses on four skill modules:
-
Mindfullness
-
Distress Tolerance
-
Emotional Regulation
-
Interpersonal Effectiveness
For Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT) sessions, children and their caregivers are seen together. Most of the session time is spent coaching caregivers in the application of specific therapy skills.
Some real-world examples of social skills are:
-
Eye contact with others during conversation
-
Smiling when greeting people
-
Shaking hands when meeting someone
-
Using the right tone and volume of voice
-
Flirting
-
Expressing opinions to others
-
Perceiving how others are feeling and showing empathy
-
Appropriate emotional responses (e.g. crying when something sad happens; laughing when someone says something funny)
